Youthful adoration, fear and terror, pastoral sensuality and ritual are the common threads in Ravel's Chansons Madécasses and Stravinsky's Sacre du Printemps. What are we capable of as humans and how far can our desires or ambitions take us? Ravel reflects on racism, slavery and sensuality in his Chansons Madécasses and Stravinsky depicts a pagan ritual in which a virgin, guarded by wise elders, dances herself to death to assuage anger and sacrifice herself for the God of Spring.
