Pianist, organist, church musician and music theorist Bert Mooiman studied at the Royal Conservatory in The Hague. He graduated cum laude as a Performing Musician in piano and organ and received the Fock medal for his exceptional artistic achievements. He won prizes at international organ competitions in Groningen and Ljubljana, among others. He completed the Theory of Music as a major in 2003 with the article 'Olivier Messiaen and the French harmony', which was honored with the Martin J. Lürsen Prize.

Bert worked as a piano soloist for Dutch National Ballet and since 2000 he has been a teacher of music theory, piano and improvisation as a main subject and research supervisor at the Royal Conservatoire. In 2021 he obtained his PhD at Leiden University with the thesis 'An Improvisatory Approach to Nineteenth-Century Music'. Bert publishes on music theory subjects and gives lectures at Leiden University. As a pianist he performs both as a soloist and in chamber music and as an organist he is a regular guest with the Rotterdam Philharmonic Orchestra. Bert is editor of the Piano Bulletin magazine of the European Piano Teachers Association.
