The festival theme for this summer is 'On a journey'. The Opening Concert is therefore inspired by Roma, originally a nomadic people. Music is very important to these travelers and especially in violin playing they experience the atmosphere of freedom and improvisation. Brahms based the finale of his iconic quartet on the swirling Roma motif with inspiring cadenzas for piano and violin. And Haydn unfolded the Roma spirit in the last part of the G Major trio like a swirling Rondo all'Ongarese. Between these two works we hear the theme from the 1998 film The Red Violin, which tells a mysterious story about a violin that has been played by famous violinists over the centuries and at one point also by Roma.
