The Graindelavoix vocal ensemble, conducted by Björn Schmelzer, will be presenting a programme of polyphonic vocal repertoire from the late 16th and early 17th centuries in the Oude Kerk. Graindelavoix is fascinated by a voice which has stopped communicating, a voice that no longer conveys a message, but is purely an expression of its basic elements: grit, intensity, and instinct.
This impressive programme revolves around a requiem written circa 1605 by the Italian composer Orazio Vecchi in Antwerp. Legend has it that this Missa pro defunctis was performed at the funeral of artist Pieter Paul Rubens on 2 June 1640. The incredibly beautiful music of this requiem has never before been performed in the Netherlands. A first!
