In this program the theme "farewell to life" is discussed. Thus we hear from Dmitri Shostakovich the last work he composed: Sonata for viola and piano, op.147 (1975).
Sonata for piano "Sonáta 1.X.1905" (1905/06) by Leoš Janáček is also about death. The Piano Quintet in C (1949) by Nikolaj Medtner is seldom heard and fits very well with the work Sonatine for flute and piano (1943) by Henri Duteilleux: they were composed around the war during the same period, but each has a totally different atmosphere.
