Born in Cambridge, Ying Lai won scholarships to study the double bass both at Chetham’s School of Music in Manchester and at the Royal Academy of Music in London where she received multiple awards, graduating with the highest honours. Ying Lai settled in the Netherlands after winning her first orchestral position with the Netherlands Philharmonic Orchestra. She has since enjoyed working with a wide variety of symphonic and chamber orchestras around the world.

Besides her intense orchestral activities, Ying Lai has performed as a soloist in The Netherlands, Germany and the UK and has recently been invited to perform the Dutch premiere of Errollyn Wallen’s Concerto Grosso for Violin, Piano and Double Bass at the Holland Festival in the Concertgebouw, Amsterdam. Ying Lai is also a much sought-after chamber musician and appears regularly in chamber music festivals throughout Europe.  

Ying Lai is currently Principal Double Bass of both the Rotterdam Philharmonic Orchestra and Amsterdam Sinfonietta. She also enjoys teaching at the Conservatorium of Amsterdam.
