Born in Cremona, Giovanni Gnocchi studied with Rocco Filippini, Mario Brunello, Enrico Bronzi and he completed his studies with Clemens Hagen, attending also Masterclasses of the leading cellists and musicians of our time. He made his debut as soloist in a concert together with Yo-Yo Ma, who said: “I had the honour to play with Giovanni Gnocchi, a wonderfully talented cellist who will make a valuable contribution to music wherever he goes”. He performed as soloist under the baton of Gustavo Dudamel, Christopher Hogwood, Carlo Rizzi, Pavel Despalj, at the Hong Kong Arts Festival, Mozart-Woche in Salzburg, Wiener Konzerthaus, Essen Philharmonie, Rosengarten Mannheim, Kurhaus Wiesbaden, Liederhalle Stuttgart.
Giovanni is prizewinner at Prague Spring Cello Competition, Antonio Janigro Competition of Zagreb and othe competitions. Giovanni has been the Principal Cellist with the Camerata Salzburg from 2003 until 2010, and in the season 2011-2012 he served as Guest Principal Cellist with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra in London.
Most recent project include concerts in duo and trio with Ilya Gringolts and Alexander Lonquich and in other chamber music projects with Lukas Hagen, Thomas Riebl, Tai Murray, Sacha Soumm, Jennifer Stumm, Esther Hoppe, Pierre Amoyal, Pavel Gililov, José Gallardo and a concert as soloist together with Mario Brunello. In 2012, after an international competition, Giovanni has been appointed Cello Professor at the Mozarteum University in Salzburg.
